๐Ÿ˜ตUnconsciousness / Unresponsive Person

A person who cannot be woken, does not respond to voice or touch, and may or may not be breathing normally.

What To Do โ€” Step by Step

1

Try to wake them โ€” shout their name loudly and tap their shoulders firmly. If no response, they are unconscious.

2

Call for help immediately. Shout loudly for anyone nearby. Send someone to find a doctor or call emergency services.

3

Check if they are breathing โ€” tilt their head back gently, lift the chin, and look for chest rise, listen for breath sounds, feel for air on your cheek. Do this for 10 seconds.

4

If they are breathing: place them in the recovery position โ€” roll them gently onto their side, bend the upper knee forward to stop them rolling, tilt the head back slightly to keep the airway open.

5

If they are NOT breathing: begin CPR immediately. Place the heel of your hand on the centre of their chest. Press down hard and fast โ€” 30 compressions, then 2 rescue breaths. Repeat until help arrives.

6

For rescue breaths: tilt the head back, lift the chin, pinch the nose shut, seal your mouth over theirs, and blow steadily for 1 second. Watch for chest rise.

7

Do not give the person anything to eat or drink.

8

Do not leave them alone. Stay until help arrives.

9

If they vomit, roll them onto their side immediately to prevent choking.
